Paul Merton was born on July 9th, 1957, in London, United Kingdom as Paul James Martin. After he finished his studies, he worked as a clerical office for a few years. His dream was to become a comedian. Since 1985, Paul is a member of The Comedy Store Players, an improvisation group from London.

In 1988, came his TV breakthrough on an improvised comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?. He is best known for his work as a writer on the own sketch show titled Paul Merton: The Series from 1991 to 1993, Paul Merton’s Life of Comedy show in 1995, and Thank God You’re Here in 2008. He has written several books, like his latest Silent Comedy in 2007 and Only When I Laugh: My Autobiography in 2014.

Paul has been married three times. His first wife was Caroline Quentin, they divorced after eight years of marriage. His second wife unfortunately died of breast cancer in 2003, only few months after their official marriage. Now he is married to Suki Webster, a fellow improviser, since 2009.
